In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Tree Fern Fibre is a premium fibrous growing medium for aroids, orchids, Hoyas, epiphytes and propagation.

Its loose fibre structure combines moisture retention with excellent aeration, allowing water to remain available without surrounding developing roots with a dense mass.

The 40 L bulk format is designed for large plant collections, nurseries, frequent repotting and growers who use tree fern fibre regularly.

It can be used on its own or blended with other substrate components.

What sets it apart
  • Fibrous, open structure: Creates substantial spaces for air and developing roots.
  • Moisture retention and distribution: Holds water throughout the fibres without forming a compact mass.
  • Slow structural breakdown: Maintains useful physical structure over extended growing periods.
  • Highly versatile: Suitable for standalone use, propagation and custom substrate mixes.
  • New Zealand origin: Made from New Zealand tree fern fibre.
  • Responsible sourcing: Harvested from privately managed New Zealand forest resources.
  • 40 L bulk format: More practical for high-volume use and larger collections.

Its combination of hydration and oxygen around the roots makes it particularly useful for sensitive, epiphytic and developing root systems.

Best suited for
  • Anthuriums
  • Alocasias
  • Hoyas
  • Orchids
  • Philodendrons and other collector aroids
  • Epiphytic plants
  • Propagation and developing root systems
  • Moss poles
  • Terrariums
  • Custom aroid and orchid substrate mixes
  • Large collections, nurseries and frequent repotting
How to use it

As a standalone medium

Fill the pot loosely and position the roots through the fibre without compressing it excessively. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.

As part of a substrate mix

Combine with pine bark, perlite, coco husk chips or mineral components to increase moisture distribution while maintaining open structure.

For propagation

Use lightly moist tree fern fibre around developing roots. Maintain consistent moisture while preserving airflow.

In moss poles

Use alone or with other coarse media to create a moist but aerated environment for aerial roots.

Tree fern fibre is not a complete source of plant nutrition, so established plants should be fertilised appropriately.
