In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Fine Seeding Mix is a light, airy growing medium for germination, cuttings and young plants.

Developing roots need consistent moisture, but they also need oxygen. This mix combines a bioactive growing medium with a high proportion of perlite and New Zealand tree fern fibre to create a fine but open root environment.

It is ready to use in seed trays, propagation pots and other small containers where conventional chunky aroid mixes would be too coarse.

What sets it apart
  • 50% perlite: Keeps the young root zone light and aerated.
  • 15% New Zealand tree fern fibre: Helps distribute moisture while maintaining fibrous structure.
  • 35% bioactive growing medium: Provides the organic base of the mix.
  • Designed for developing roots: Finer and more uniform than a mature aroid substrate.
  • Ready to use: No additional mixing is required for standard propagation and seed-starting applications.

The objective is to maintain consistent moisture without allowing the fine root zone to become dense and airless.

Best suited for
  • Seed starting
  • Rooted and unrooted cuttings
  • Young plants and seedlings
  • Propagation trays and small nursery pots
  • Developing aroid root systems
  • Plants that need a finer substrate without sacrificing aeration
How to use it

Use directly from the bag.

Fill seed trays, propagation pots or small containers loosely. Do not compress the mix heavily, as the air spaces between particles are important for developing roots.

Moisten evenly after planting and keep the substrate consistently moist but not permanently saturated.

When using a propagation dome or high-humidity setup, provide periodic ventilation to prevent stagnant conditions.

Once the plant develops an established root system, move it into a substrate better suited to its mature growth requirements when necessary.
