In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Chunky Perlite is a coarse, lightweight mineral growing medium designed to increase aeration, drainage and long-term structure in substrate mixes.

Unlike the fine perlite commonly found in standard potting soils, our perlite is graded to approximately 5 to 15 mm. The larger particles create substantial spaces throughout the substrate, helping air and water move freely around the roots.

It is particularly useful for aroids and other indoor plants that require an open, fast-draining root environment.

What sets it apart

Particle size makes a major difference with perlite.

Fine perlite can become lost within a dense substrate and provides much less structural separation between the other components. PlantScraper uses chunky European perlite approximately 5 to 15 mm in size to create a visibly more open root zone.

Its key characteristics include:

  • Large 5 to 15 mm particles for substantial air space
  • Extremely lightweight structure
  • Improves drainage without adding significant weight to the pot
  • Helps reduce substrate compaction
  • Structurally stable and slow to break down
  • Suitable for both finished mixes and custom substrate recipes
  • European origin

Laboratory analysis of our perlite measured an EC of 0.016 mS/cm and pH of 6.13, confirming its very low soluble salt content.

Perlite does not replace proper watering, nutrition or pot drainage. Its role is to improve the physical structure around the roots.

Best suited for

Chunky Perlite is particularly useful for:

  • Monsteras
  • Philodendrons
  • Anthuriums
  • Alocasias
  • Hoyas
  • Orchids
  • Cacti and succulents
  • Propagation mixes
  • Seedling substrates
  • Custom aroid mixes
  • Any substrate requiring additional aeration and drainage

It is also a major structural component in several PlantScraper specialist substrate formulas.

How to use it

Mix Chunky Perlite with other growing media whenever you want to increase air space, improve drainage or reduce substrate density.

The amount required depends on the other ingredients and the plant being grown.

For aroid substrates:
Combine with bark, coco husk chips, tree fern fibre or a suitable organic growing medium to create an open root environment.

For cacti and succulents:
Use as part of a mineral-rich blend where fast drainage and strong aeration are priorities.

For propagation and seedlings:
Combine with moisture-retentive media to prevent the developing root zone from becoming excessively dense.

For existing substrate mixes:
Add Chunky Perlite when a mix feels too fine, compact or moisture-retentive.

Avoid crushing the particles during mixing.

Perlite naturally produces some dust and small particles during transport. If required, lightly rinse or dampen it before handling to reduce airborne dust.
