In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Mineral Mix is a purely mineral, soil-free growing medium designed for semi-hydro, self-watering systems and growers who want precise control over the root environment.

Made from pumice, lava and zeolite, it provides a permanently open structure that allows water to move through the pot while maintaining air spaces around the roots.

It is available in two particle sizes:

  • Fine Mineral Mix, 2 to 8 mm for smaller roots and stronger capillary movement
  • Chunky Mineral Mix, 8 to 16 mm for larger roots and greater air space

Both versions contain no added long-term fertiliser, leaving nutrition under your control.

What sets it apart

A mineral substrate is not simply a collection of stones. Particle size, porosity and mineral properties determine how water, air and nutrients behave around the roots.

  • Pumice: Porous and lightweight, helping maintain aeration while retaining some moisture.
  • Lava: Provides durable structure and additional porous surfaces throughout the root zone.
  • Zeolite: Can retain water and positively charged nutrients within its porous structure.
  • 100% mineral and soil-free: Does not compact like conventional organic potting soil.
  • Two particle sizes: Allows the physical structure to be matched to different root systems.
  • No added long-term fertiliser: Lets the grower control nutrient concentration and feeding frequency.

The substrate provides the physical root environment. You control the nutrition.

Best suited for

Fine Mineral Mix, 2 to 8 mm

  • Alocasias
  • Smaller aroids
  • Plants with finer or developing root systems
  • Propagation and young plants
  • Self-watering systems where stronger capillary movement is required

Chunky Mineral Mix, 8 to 16 mm

  • Monsteras
  • Large Philodendrons
  • Mature aroids
  • Plants with substantial root systems
  • Growers prioritising maximum air space around the roots
How to use it

Mineral substrate behaves differently from conventional potting soil.

When transferring a plant from organic substrate, carefully remove as much loose organic material from the roots as practical without unnecessarily damaging healthy roots.

Fill the pot loosely with Mineral Mix and settle it gently around the root system. Do not compact the substrate.

Use with a compatible reservoir, wick or self-watering system according to the pot design.

Regular fertilisation is essential. Mineral Mix contains no complete nutrient programme, so use an appropriate fertiliser and adjust concentration according to the plant and growing method.

Periodically flush the substrate with clean water to help remove accumulated fertiliser salts.

If loose dust is visible after transport, a quick rinse before use can remove fine particles.
