In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Coco Husk Chips are a premium coarse substrate component for adding moisture retention, airflow and durable structure to aroid, orchid and epiphytic growing mixes.

Unlike fine coco coir or coco pith, these chips maintain a coarse physical structure that absorbs and gradually releases moisture while preserving air spaces around the roots.

They are washed, buffered and ready to use directly from the bag.

What sets it apart
  • Washed: Reduces excess soluble salts naturally present in unprocessed coconut material.
  • Buffered: Improves the chemical stability of the coco before use.
  • Very low specified EC: Below 0.5 mS/cm.
  • Consistent 10 to 15 mm grading: Provides predictable coarse structure with limited fine material.
  • Moisture-retentive: Absorbs water while maintaining physical air spaces.
  • Screened and sieved: Selected for a more consistent substrate component.
  • Origin: India.

The combination of coarse particle size and water-holding ability makes coco husk chips especially useful when you want more moisture retention without turning the substrate into a fine, dense medium.

Best suited for
  • Monsteras
  • Philodendrons
  • Anthuriums
  • Orchids
  • Hoyas
  • Other tropical and epiphytic plants
  • Custom aroid substrate mixes
  • Orchid mixes
  • Moss pole filling mixes
  • Substrates requiring additional moisture retention without excessive compaction
How to use it

Use directly from the bag. The chips are already washed and buffered.

For aroid mixes:
Combine with bark, perlite, tree fern fibre or a suitable organic growing medium to increase moisture retention while maintaining coarse structure.

For orchids and epiphytes:
Use alone where appropriate or combine with bark and other coarse materials according to the plant's moisture requirements.

For moss poles:
Combine with sphagnum and bark to create a structured medium that retains moisture while maintaining airflow.

As a natural fibrous material, coco chips can settle slightly through repeated wet and dry cycles. Refresh or restructure the mix when repotting if required.
