In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Sphagnum Moss is a premium Chilean long-fibre growing medium for moss poles, propagation, orchids, terrariums and moisture-sensitive root systems.

Its long fibres can retain a large amount of water while maintaining air spaces around developing roots.

Unlike dense growing media, sphagnum provides high moisture availability without forming a compact mass, making it particularly useful for aerial roots, cuttings and epiphytic plants.

A 300 g bag expands significantly once loosened and hydrated, providing approximately 10 to 12 L of usable moss.

What sets it apart

Not all sphagnum moss has the same fibre length, purity or structure.

  • Premium Chilean long-fibre sphagnum
  • Fibres reaching approximately 15 cm
  • High moisture retention
  • Long fibres that maintain a light, open structure
  • Excellent capillary movement through continuous fibrous material
  • 100% natural and biodegradable
  • No added fertiliser or synthetic substrate components

Its combination of water retention and aeration makes long-fibre sphagnum particularly effective around young roots and aerial roots.

Best suited for
  • Moss poles
  • Plant propagation and cuttings
  • Orchids and other epiphytic plants
  • Aerial root development
  • Carnivorous plants where sphagnum is appropriate
  • Terrariums and high-humidity growing environments
  • Rooting sensitive or recovering plants
  • Adding moisture retention to coarse substrate mixes

For PlantScraper self-watering moss pole systems, pure sphagnum is our preferred filling when maximum capillary movement is required.

How to use it

Before use, place the required amount of sphagnum in water and allow it to rehydrate fully. Gently squeeze out excess water before use.

For moss poles:
Fill evenly without compressing the moss tightly. The fibres need to retain air as well as moisture.

For propagation:
Wrap lightly moist sphagnum around the node or developing roots. Keep it consistently moist but not permanently waterlogged.

For orchids and epiphytes:
Use alone where appropriate or combine with coarse materials such as bark or tree fern fibre.

For substrate mixes:
Add when additional moisture retention and fibrous structure are required.

If sphagnum becomes completely dry, rewet it gradually in several passes rather than flooding it once.

Sphagnum is not a complete source of plant nutrition, so established plants should be fertilised appropriately.
