In detail

Why this substrate?

A purpose-built growing medium for aerial roots inside moss poles, combining moisture retention, capillary movement, airflow and coarse physical structure.

Choose it when you want a more open and structurally varied moss pole filling than pure sphagnum.

What sets it apart
  • Long-fibre sphagnum: Retains and distributes moisture through the pole.
  • Washed and buffered coco husk chips: Absorb moisture while maintaining a coarse 10-15 mm structure.
  • 15-25 mm pine bark: Creates larger air spaces and physical separation around developing aerial roots.
  • Exact three-part recipe: Each ingredient has a defined moisture-management or structural role.
  • Laboratory-informed development: A tested sample measured approximately pH 5.9 with very low conductivity of 0.064 mS/cm.
  • Prepared in Prague: Measured, mixed, inspected and packed by PlantScraper.
Best suited for
  • classic moss poles
  • front-opening moss poles
  • Monsteras, Philodendrons, Epipremnums, Scindapsus and Rhaphidophoras
  • Single and extended moss pole setups
  • Growers who want greater aeration and structural variation than pure sphagnum provides

For wick-fed self-watering moss pole systems, use pure long-fibre sphagnum moss when maximum capillary movement is required.

How to use it
  1. Moisten the mix evenly before filling the moss pole.
  2. Distribute it throughout the pole without packing it tightly.
  3. Position the plant's aerial-root side against the accessible growing surface.
  4. Water from the top and allow moisture to move downward through the pole.

Keep the mix consistently moist but not permanently saturated. Aerial roots need moisture, oxygen and physical space to develop.

The mix is not a complete source of plant nutrition. Once aerial roots are active inside the pole, apply an appropriately diluted fertiliser from above.
