In detail

Why this product?

Gather, separate and handle Anthurium pollen during controlled pollination with a modular system developed by PlantScraper.

The reusable Pollector collection sheet folds beneath the inflorescence to catch released pollen. Its pointed end helps guide the collected material towards a brush or storage container while reducing spills during transfer.

Choose an individual component pack or the complete set.

Why it works
  • Foldable collection surface: Positions beneath the pollen-producing area of the inflorescence.
  • Pointed end: Helps guide collected pollen into a small container.
  • Separate brushes: Make it easier to keep donor samples apart.
  • Small storage containers: Provide an organised place for labelled pollen samples.
  • Protective mesh bags: Cover pollinated inflorescences and developing fruit.
  • Reusable collection sheets: Can be washed, dried and used again for future pollination projects.
Best suited for

Use the components for:

  • Collecting pollen from Anthurium inflorescences
  • Applying pollen during controlled pollination
  • Keeping donor samples separate
  • Organising and labelling collected pollen
  • Providing physical protection around pollinated inflorescences or developing fruit

Pollen production and receptivity occur at different stages of Anthurium flowering. Confirm that the donor is releasing pollen and that the receiving inflorescence is at the appropriate receptive stage before application.

The supplied containers organise pollen but do not preserve its viability by themselves. Storage success depends on the Anthurium species or hybrid, pollen condition, moisture, temperature and storage method. No fixed storage lifespan is guaranteed.

The mesh bags provide physical protection and airflow. They are not pollen-exclusion bags and should not be relied upon to block airborne pollen or guarantee a controlled cross.

How to use it

Collect the pollen

  1. Remove the protective film from the collection sheet before first use.
  2. Fold the sheet along its centre.
  3. Position it beneath the pollen-producing part of the inflorescence without pinching or bending the stem.
  4. Use a clean, dry brush to move released pollen onto the sheet.
  5. Use the pollen immediately or guide it towards the pointed end and transfer it into a clean, dry container.
  6. Label the container with the donor plant and collection date.

Collect from one donor plant at a time and keep samples clearly separated.

Prevent accidental mixing

  • Use a separate clean brush for each donor plant.
  • Clean and completely dry the collection sheet before changing donors.
  • Pay particular attention to the fold and pointed end, where pollen may accumulate.
  • Keep labelled containers closed and away from exposed pollen while working.

Store collected pollen

For delayed use, follow an established storage method suitable for the plants you are working with. Label every container and record the storage conditions.

Use the protective bags

Choose a bag large enough to cover the inflorescence or developing fruit without compressing it. Close the drawstring carefully around the supporting stem without tightening it enough to restrict or damage the plant.

Clean and reuse

Wash the PET collection sheets with water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and allow them to dry completely before collecting pollen again.

Remove residue from the fold and pointed end, then store the clean sheets away from exposed pollen and dust. Ensure brushes and containers are clean and completely dry before they contact a new sample.
