In detail

Why this substrate?

PlantScraper Premium Aroid Mix is a ready-to-use, highly aerated substrate for tropical aroids, designed to keep the root zone open while maintaining enough moisture for healthy growth.

It is available in two formulations:

  • Essential Aroid Mix for a balanced, versatile everyday aroid substrate
  • Supreme Aroid Mix for a more advanced structure with New Zealand tree fern fibre

Both formulas use defined volumetric recipes and combine a bioactive growing medium with coarse structural components rather than relying on dense conventional potting soil.

The result is a substrate designed around the balance of airflow, moisture retention and drainage that aroid roots require.

What sets it apart

The performance of an aroid substrate depends heavily on particle size, structure and ingredient quality.

  • Chunky perlite, approximately 5 to 15 mm: Creates substantial air spaces around the roots.
  • Washed and buffered coco husk chips, approximately 10 to 15 mm: Retain moisture while preserving coarse structure.
  • Pine bark in different grades: Provides long-lasting physical structure throughout the mix.
  • Bioactive growing medium: Forms the organic base of both formulas.
  • New Zealand tree fern fibre in Supreme: Adds a fibrous component that retains and distributes moisture while keeping the root zone open.

The formulas are measured by volume, mixed in Prague and prepared in controlled batches.

Rather than relying on a fixed long-term feeding programme, the mix allows you to adjust nutrition according to the plant, season, light levels and growth rate.

Best suited for

Essential Aroid Mix is particularly suitable for:

  • Philodendrons
  • Epipremnums
  • Syngoniums
  • Scindapsus
  • Rhaphidophoras
  • Other tropical aroids that benefit from an airy, well-draining substrate

Supreme Aroid Mix is particularly suitable for:

  • Collector aroids
  • Plants with more demanding root systems
  • Growers looking for additional moisture distribution and fibrous structure
  • Mixed aroid collections where one premium substrate needs to work across several genera

For more specialised root requirements, choose the dedicated Monstera Mix, Anthurium Mix or Alocasia Mix.

How to use it

Use directly from the bag.

Choose a pot with reliable drainage and appropriate ventilation, and avoid compressing the substrate tightly around the roots. The coarse structure should remain open so air can circulate through the root zone.

Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.

Adjust watering according to pot size, root development, light, temperature, humidity and airflow.

Supplement with a suitable fertiliser according to the plant's needs and growing conditions.

When repotting, remove only loose or degraded old substrate rather than aggressively disturbing healthy roots.
