Climbing aroids such as Monstera, Philodendron and Epipremnum can benefit from a moss pole that gives aerial roots a moist medium to grow into.

Anthuriums often benefit from an open, well-aerated root zone. Alocasias generally prefer more consistent access to moisture while still requiring oxygen around their roots. Hoyas and other flexible vines may need guidance rather than a rooting surface.

The same principle applies to pots and substrates. A self-watering pot should be paired with a medium suited to reservoir watering. A highly ventilated pot should be combined with a substrate that balances airflow and moisture retention.

Choose according to what you want the support to do.

• Moss pole: for climbing plants that produce aerial roots. When filled with sphagnum moss or moss pole mix and kept moist, it becomes an extension of the root environment rather than simply holding the stem upright.
• Arch trellis: for guiding flexible climbing, twining or trailing plants such as Hoyas, Dischidias and Cissus.
• Acrylic plant stake: for discreet vertical support without creating a climbing surface.
• Leaf support hook: for supporting an individual leaf or petiole that needs repositioning or additional support.

A moss pole is particularly useful for climbing Monsteras, Philodendrons, Epipremnums and Scindapsus.

The strongest support is not automatically the right support. Choose according to the plant's natural growth habit and what you want it to do next.

Choose a classic moss pole when maximum stability, slower drying and long-term vertical growth are the priorities.

Choose a front-opening moss pole when you want direct access to aerial roots, nodes and cuttings. The opening makes propagation, air layering, plant removal and future manipulation of the root system easier.

Choose the pole size for the plant you expect to grow, not only the plant you have today.

• S or M: smaller climbing plants
• M or L: larger Philodendrons and similar climbers
• L or XL: large Monsteras and other heavy climbing plants

For the filling:

• Sphagnum moss: maximum moisture retention and capillary movement
• Moss pole filling mix: a more open and structured rooting environment

For a complete long-term setup, combine the pole with a compatible anchor, plant ties and a rapid dripper. Wall anchors can provide additional stability as extended plants become taller and heavier.

Choose the pot according to the root system, substrate and watering method.

• Clear ventilated aroid pot: ideal for conventional top watering with an airy organic or hybrid substrate. Transparency lets you inspect roots and moisture while side ventilation and drainage help maintain airflow.
• Self-watering aroid pot: combines reservoir watering with root visibility and ventilation. Particularly useful with mineral and semi-hydro substrates.
• Self-watering pot with clear insert: provides a removable inner pot and reservoir system for straightforward root inspection and maintenance.
• Tower aroid pot: provides additional vertical root space for plants that develop deeper root systems.
• Hanging self-watering pot: suited to trailing plants and situations where shelf space is limited.
• Pot cover: can add light protection, improve appearance, preserve ventilation or create an additional water reservoir depending on the design.

There is no universally best pot. The best choice is the one in which pot, substrate, water and roots work together.

Choose according to the plant, root structure and watering style you prefer.

Organic and hybrid substrates

These combine ingredients such as bark, perlite, coco, tree fern fibre and growing medium to balance moisture retention with air spaces around the roots.

They work particularly well with ventilated pots and conventional top watering. Premium aroid mix is a ready-to-use option for many indoor aroids.

Mineral substrates

Mineral substrate mix uses structurally stable particles such as pumice, lava and zeolite.

It is particularly useful in self-watering and semi-hydro systems because the particles maintain air spaces while allowing moisture to move through the root zone.

• Fine mineral mix: greater contact between particles and stronger capillary movement. Particularly useful for smaller root systems and Alocasias.
• Chunky mineral mix: larger air spaces and greater aeration. Better suited to substantial roots such as those of large Monsteras.

The substrate provides the physical root environment while you retain control over nutrition, concentration and feeding frequency.

Choose according to the plant's roots rather than assuming every tropical plant needs the same mix.

For moss poles, you can also use premium long-fibre sphagnum moss.

Ingredient specifications matter. Our range includes washed and buffered coco husk chips screened to approximately 10 to 15 mm with specified EC below 0.5 mS/cm, premium Chilean long-fibre sphagnum moss, New Zealand tree fern fibre, chunky European perlite and premium New Zealand Pinus radiata Orchiata bark.

Selected finished substrates and raw materials are analysed for parameters including pH, electrical conductivity, moisture, dry matter, organic matter and selected elemental parameters.

Natural ingredients vary, so laboratory analysis does not mean every bag is chemically identical. It means our formulations are developed using measured information together with practical growing experience.

For a mixed indoor plant collection, HESI HousePlant Elixir is the simplest all-purpose choice. It provides complete nutrition and can be used with both organic substrates and mineral growing media.

For more specialised growing:

More products do not automatically mean better growth. Start with a suitable complete fertiliser and add targeted products only when they serve a clear purpose.

Monstera

For a Monstera you want to grow vertically, combine a suitably sized ventilated aroid pot, Monstera mix and a classic moss pole or front-opening moss pole.

Large Monstera deliciosa plants intended for long-term growth generally benefit from L or XL support systems. A chunky mineral substrate can also work well when growing in a compatible self-watering system.

Philodendron

For climbing Philodendrons, combine an airy substrate such as Essential or Supreme aroid mix with a ventilated pot and moss pole. Choose the pole size according to the mature plant, not only its current size.

Anthurium

Prioritise root aeration and appropriate moisture retention. Anthurium mix, ventilated aroid pots and tower aroid pots are useful options depending on the plant's root architecture.

Alocasia

Consistent moisture is particularly important. Alocasia mix works well for organic growing, while fine mineral mix combined with a compatible self-watering system provides a strong semi-hydro option.

These are starting points rather than rigid rules. Light, temperature, root condition, plant size and watering habits should always be considered.

Not automatically.

Self-watering pots work best when the pot, substrate, roots and reservoir system are compatible.

A properly managed reservoir can provide more consistent access to moisture, less frequent watering, a more stable moisture level around the roots and excellent compatibility with mineral substrates and semi-hydro growing.

For an airy organic aroid mix, a ventilated drainage pot with conventional top watering may be simpler and more forgiving.

Self-watering does not mean keeping roots permanently saturated. Roots still require oxygen, so the substrate needs enough structure and air space while allowing moisture to move toward the root zone. A correctly selected mineral substrate can be particularly useful in reservoir-based systems.

The objective is not to make every plant self-watering. It is to choose the watering system that best matches the roots.

Start with airflow, light, organisation and water management, not decoration alone.
